Which coffee machine do you need?
Three questions and we tell you exactly which of the 15 fits the way you drink coffee. No sign-ups, no emails.
1. How do you normally drink coffee?
2. How involved do you want to be making it?
3. How much do you want to spend?
Your ideal model is:
Buying guide: what really matters
The most important decision before you buy. We explain it plainly, with no empty jargon — the honest guide you needed.
Bean-to-cup, espresso, capsules or drip
A bean-to-cup machine grinds, tamps and serves at the touch of a button: maximum convenience, higher price. Manual espresso (portafilter) gives the best coffee if you put in the technique and a good grinder. Capsule machines are the most convenient and the cheapest to get into, though the cost per coffee is higher. Drip is ideal for plain coffee by the jug for several people.
Real pressure: 9 bar, not 15 or 20
Marketing boasts of 15 or 20 bars, but a good espresso is extracted at 9 bars. What matters is not the pump's maximum figure but that the machine holds a stable pressure and the right temperature (90-96°C). Be wary of anyone selling bars as if more were always better.
Grinder and milk system
Grinding the beans on the spot makes all the difference against pre-ground coffee: prioritise a conical burr grinder, built in or separate. For cappuccinos, Philips' LatteGo system and De'Longhi's milk jugs make frothing easy; a manual steam wand gives more control but takes practice.
How we test
We do not copy Amazon listings. Every recommendation is based on the manufacturer's published specifications, the price and availability on Amazon Spain. How we select:
- We analyse the best-selling and best-rated coffee machines on Amazon Spain over the last 12 months.
- We check real pressure, temperature and grind quality against the manufacturer's marketing figures.
- We compare value for money within each type, because you cannot compare a capsule machine with a bean-to-cup machine.
- We compare the spec sheets looking at durability, maintenance, descaling and noise.
- We review prices regularly, since on Amazon they swing a lot on Prime Day and Black Friday.
What coffee costs you a year (and what you would save)
Move the slider and you will see where your money goes. Most people recoup the price of the machine in less than a year.
Average prices in Spain (2026): coffee-shop coffee 1,40 € · compatible capsule 0,30-0,45 € · 1 kg of specialty beans ~22 €, which yields about 140 cups ≈ 0,14 €/cup. Indicative calculation over 365 days, excluding milk and electricity.

Frequently asked questions
Which type of coffee machine suits me best?
It depends on your priority. If you want coffee-shop coffee at the touch of a button with no fuss, a bean-to-cup machine (De'Longhi Magnifica, Philips 2200 series). If you enjoy the ritual and pulling the best espresso, a manual machine with a grinder (Sage Barista Express). If you are after convenience and a low entry price, capsules (Nespresso). And for plain coffee by the jug, a drip machine.
How many bars of pressure does an espresso machine need?
A good espresso is extracted at about 9 bars. A machine advertising 15 or 20 bars does not mean better coffee: that is the pump's maximum pressure, not the extraction pressure. What matters is that it holds pressure and temperature steady. Almost every home machine comfortably meets the real 9 bars.
Is a bean-to-cup machine worth it over capsules?
If you drink several coffees a day, yes: use whole beans (cheaper per cup and better tasting), grind on the spot and forget about buying capsules. It costs more up front, but the cost per coffee drops a lot. If you have one or two coffees now and then, a capsule machine is more practical and cheaper to get into.
Is the built-in grinder worth it?
A lot. Coffee loses its aroma within minutes of being ground, so grinding the beans right before brewing improves the result noticeably. A conical burr grinder (built in or standalone) is the best investment for stepping up a level, far more so than buying pre-ground coffee.
