Nespresso Vertuo vs Original is really a choice between two coffee ecosystems, not two machines. Original is the classic system: small aluminum capsules, a 19-bar pump and short, intense coffee, with cheap compatible capsules in most supermarkets. Vertuo uses bigger barcoded pods spun at high speed to make anything from an espresso to a large mug with thick crema, but the pods come almost only from Nespresso. Here's how to pick the right one, and which machine to buy in each.
Choose Original if you mostly drink espresso, lungo or milk drinks you make yourself, and you want the lowest cost per cup. Choose Vertuo if you mostly drink large, American-style mugs of coffee and value crema and convenience over running cost.
Key differences

| Who sets the recipe | You, with the cup buttons | The machine, by reading the barcode on each pod |

The two systems are not cross-compatible: Original capsules don't fit Vertuo machines and vice versa. US readers should know one more thing: Nespresso's US marketing leans heavily toward Vertuo because Americans drink bigger cups, but Original machines are still widely sold on Amazon.com and work brilliantly for espresso and milk drinks.
The hidden cost: the pods
You pay for the machine once and for pods every day. With Original you can switch between official capsules and cheaper compatible ones from coffee brands and store labels, which brings the cost per cup down a lot. With Vertuo you depend on Nespresso's own pods, so your cost per cup stays higher and fixed. At two or more cups a day, that difference outweighs the price of the machine within a year or two. Pod prices vary by store and change often, so compare the per-pod price where you shop; we break down running costs further in our pod coffee machine guide.

What about milk drinks?
Neither system froths milk on its own, so if you drink lattes or cappuccinos, budget for a milk frother. Nespresso sells bundles that include its Aeroccino frother, and both Original and Vertuo machines are often sold that way; a standalone frother works just as well. Original's short, intense espresso tends to cut through milk better than a long Vertuo coffee, which is why many latte drinkers end up on Original even though Vertuo is marketed as the more modern system.
Cup sizes, in practice
Original machines brew short drinks: an espresso of around 1.35 oz (40 ml) and a lungo of around 3.7 oz (110 ml). Vertuo pods come in several sizes, each matched to a cup volume from espresso up to a large mug, and some Vertuo machines also brew a carafe size. If your morning routine is a full mug of black coffee, Original will feel stingy; if you drink espresso, Vertuo's extra sizes are money spent on nothing.
Which one suits you?
- Espresso and cortado, and you want to save: Original.
- A large black coffee with crema, American style: Vertuo.
- A latte or cappuccino every day: either system plus a separate milk frother (Nespresso's Aeroccino or a bundle that includes one), or consider a bean-to-cup machine: from about three cups a day it usually works out cheaper. See our super-automatic espresso machine guide.
- Regular drip-style mugs and the cheapest pods in the US: look at Keurig in our pod machine roundup.
How we chose
We didn't test these machines at home and we don't invent ratings. We compared official spec sheets and manuals with what verified buyers consistently report, focusing on what actually changes your cup and your bills: brewing system, pod availability and cost, and day-to-day upkeep. Whatever you buy, descale it regularly; our descaling guide covers Nespresso step by step.

Can you use Original capsules in a Vertuo machine?
No. The two systems use different capsule shapes and brewing methods, so Original capsules do not fit Vertuo machines and Vertuo pods do not fit Original machines.
Are there compatible pods for Nespresso Vertuo?
Practically none. Vertuo machines read a barcode on each pod and almost the entire range comes from Nespresso. Original has many compatible capsules from other brands.
Which Nespresso system is cheaper per cup?
Original, because you can use cheaper compatible capsules from supermarkets and coffee brands.
Does Vertuo make real espresso?
It makes espresso and double espresso sizes, but by spinning the pod rather than with a pressure pump. It shines most with longer coffees topped with thick crema.
Which Nespresso is best for a beginner?
For espresso, an Original machine like the Essenza Mini or Pixie. For large mugs of coffee, the Vertuo Pop (Vertuo Pop+ in the US).
