As Descaling your Coffee Machine Correctly

How to Descale your Coffee Machine

Limescale is the silent enemy of any coffee machine. In Spain, 70% of cities have water of medium-high hardness (more than 150 ppm of calcium carbonate), which means scale builds up in your machine's water circuit faster than you think.

A scaled-up machine brews coffee at a lower temperature, extracts the aromas less well and, if left unattended, can break down for good. This guide explains how to descale any type of coffee machine properly, with which products and how often.

How to tell if your machine needs descaling

Warning signs: the coffee comes out more slowly than usual, the machine is noisier, the coffee is less hot, or a warning light appears. If it has been more than 3 months without descaling in a hard-water area, it probably needs treatment already.

Water Hardness by City in Spain

CityHardness (ppm)Recommended frequency
Madrid180-250 ppmEvery 2 months
Barcelona200-300 ppmEvery 2 months
Valencia250-350 ppmEvery 1-2 months
Seville150-200 ppmEvery 2-3 months
Bilbao50-100 ppmEvery 4-6 months
Santiago de Compostela30-70 ppmEvery 5-6 months

Which Descaling Product to Use

Official manufacturer product

It is always the safest option for keeping the warranty. The official descalers from De'Longhi, Nespresso, Philips and Sage are formulated for their specific circuits. The price is higher (8-15 € per treatment) but the machine is as safe as it gets.

Universal citric acid descaler

Powdered citric acid (2-4 €/kg on Amazon) is the cheapest and safest descaler for most coffee machines. It dissolves completely, leaves no residual smell or taste and is biodegradable. Standard dose: 30 grams per litre of water.

How to Descale: Step by Step by Machine Type

Nespresso machines (Original Line and Vertuo)

  1. Empty the water tank and take the capsules out of the capsule holder
  2. Fill the tank with 500 ml of water and the contents of the Nespresso descaling sachet
  3. Place a container of at least 1 litre under the coffee outlet
  4. Activate descaling mode (varies by model, check the manual)
  5. The process takes 20-30 minutes. The machine makes automatic pauses
  6. When it finishes, run 2-3 rinse cycles with clean water

De'Longhi machines (Magnifica, Dedica, PrimaDonna)

  1. The "DESCAL" indicator on the display means it is time to descale
  2. Prepare the solution: one sachet of De'Longhi descaler plus 1 litre of water in the tank
  3. Place a container of at least 2 litres under the steam wand and the coffee outlet
  4. On Magnifica machines: hold down the "Americano" and "Espresso" buttons until the light flashes
  5. The process takes 25-35 minutes with automatic pauses
  6. Run 2 rinse cycles with clean water until the display confirms the process

Philips machines (Series 1200, 2200, 3200)

  1. The display shows "CALC CLEAN" when descaling is needed
  2. Remove the AquaClean filter if you have one fitted
  3. Add the Philips descaler to the full tank (1,5L of water)
  4. Start the mode from the screen following the instructions
  5. The process takes roughly 30 minutes
  6. Refit the AquaClean filter to extend the time between descalings

Sage machines (Barista Express, Bambino)

Sage machines use a two-step system: descaling the brew group and the steam wand separately. The descaling indicator comes on automatically. Follow the guided process on the screen with the official Sage descaling kit.

How to Prevent Limescale

The best strategy is preventive. Using filtered water (a Brita jug or a reverse osmosis filter) significantly reduces limescale deposits. Philips and De'Longhi machines include optional AquaClean filters which, when fitted correctly from the very first use, can stretch the time between descalings to as much as 5.000 cups.

Another option is to use bottled mineral water low in minerals (Font Vella, Bezoya) to fill the tank if you live in a very hard water area. The extra cost is low and it significantly extends the machine's working life.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a coffee machine be descaled?

It depends on how hard the water is where you live. In cities with hard water such as Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia, descale every 2-3 months. In soft-water areas (northern Spain), every 4-6 months. Most modern machines have a warning light that tells you when it is due.

Can I use vinegar to descale my coffee machine?

It is not advisable. Vinegar can damage the rubber gaskets and leave behind smells and tastes that are hard to get rid of. Acetic acid is less effective than citric acid at dissolving limescale deposits. Always use the product recommended by the manufacturer or a universal citric acid descaler.

What happens if I never descale the machine?

Limescale builds up in the water circuit and the boiler, reducing heating efficiency and increasing brewing time. In the long run, scale deposits can block the ducts and damage the pump or the boiler, requiring expensive repairs or replacing the machine.

Which universal descaler works for all coffee machines?

Powdered citric acid or universal descalers from brands such as Durgol or Caffenu work with most makes. However, some brands (De'Longhi, Nespresso, Philips) recommend using their official product so as not to void the warranty. Always check the manual before using an alternative product.
