AeroPress Original or Philips Series 5400 LatteGo: the short answer

If you would rather not read the whole comparison: the AeroPress Original is the default option and the one we recommend to most people, and the Philips Series 5400 LatteGo beats it in one specific scenario — when your priority is everyday use. The real difference between the two is not on the spec sheet, it is in how they behave in the use you will give them. We break it down point by point below.

Manual filter: V60, Chemex and AeroPress

Manual methods cost little and give a clean, aromatic coffee that no automatic machine can match. The V60 (Hario) is the most precise and the most demanding on the pour; the Chemex, with its thicker paper filter, holds back more oils and gives a very clean cup, ideal for light roasts; the AeroPress combines immersion and pressure, tolerates any grind and is practically unbreakable, which is why it is the queen of travel. With all three you need a gooseneck kettle to control the flow and a scale. Total investment: under 100 €.

Power use and the cost of coffee at home

An espresso machine uses between 1.100 and 1.500 W, but only while heating and extracting: the real consumption of two coffees a day is around 3-6 € a year, so wattage should not weigh on your decision. What does weigh is standby: bean-to-cup machines that switch off after 15-30 minutes avoid the residual draw that on older machines reached a permanent 15-20 W. Against the 1,40-1,80 € a coffee shop charges, any home machine pays for itself quickly: the saving is in the habit, not in the appliance.

Mistakes that ruin coffee (and it is not the machine)

Five mistakes explain most bad coffee at home: using months-old ground coffee kept in the opened bag; very hard water or tap water with chlorine; do not warming the cup, which drops the temperature of the drink by 8 to 10 °C at a stroke; not purging the group head before extracting; and tamping with uneven pressure, which creates channels where the water escapes without extracting. None of them cost money to fix. Before changing machine, correct these five: in most cases the problem was never the appliance.

Pressurised vs non-pressurised portafilter

It is the most important difference in the 80-300 € range and almost nobody explains it. The pressurised (double-bottomed, with a valve that creates the back-pressure artificially) forgives a bad grind and produces crema even with supermarket coffee: ideal if you are not going to buy a grinder. The non-pressurised (mesh bottom, barista type) depends on you grinding, tamping and dosing well, but it is the only one that gets you to a specialty espresso. If you buy a machine with a pressurised basket expecting to make third-wave coffee, you are going to get frustrated.

The grind: 50% of the result is right here

You can own a 1.000 € machine and make bad coffee with a 20 € blade grinder. The blades smash the bean and give an uneven powder: large particles that under-extract and fines that over-extract, in the same cup. You need conical or flat burrs (burrs), which grind to a uniform, adjustable size. For espresso we are talking about around 200-400 microns and it needs a grinder with fine steps; for a French press, 800-1.000 microns. If your budget is tight, split it: a modest machine with a good grinder beats the other way round.

Capsules or beans: the real cost per cup

Here the numbers are clear. A closed-system capsule costs between 0,30 and 0,45 €; own-brand compatibles come down to 0,15-0,22 € but with uneven quality. A kilo of freshly roasted whole beans costs 15-25 € and yields around 55 double doses of 18 g, that is 0,10-0,15 € per cup. At two coffees a day, the annual difference is around 150-200 €: a 400 € bean-to-cup machine pays for itself in a little over two years against capsules. Capsules win on convenience, zero cleaning and zero learning curve; whole beans win on cost, freshness and quality ceiling.

Verdict: which to choose

The AeroPress Original for most people; the Philips Series 5400 LatteGo if your main use is everyday use. Neither is a bad buy, they are simply different profiles: the mistake would be choosing by the price on one particular day instead of by how you are going to use it over the coming years. Check the current price of both before making the call.

Frequently asked questions

How much caffeine does an espresso have against a filter coffee?

Less than you would think: a double espresso is around 120-150 mg and a large 250 ml filter cup reaches 150-200 mg, because it uses far more water and contact time. Espresso concentrates flavour, not total caffeine.

How do you store coffee beans?

In an airtight opaque container, at room temperature and away from kitchen steam. No fridge and no freezer for daily use: the beans absorb moisture and smells every time you take them out and put them back. Buy 250-500 g bags and use them within three or four weeks.

Is a coffee machine with an app or wifi worth it?

Unless you have a specific need, no. It is the feature most often abandoned after the first month and it adds price without touching what matters: grinder, temperature stability and milk circuit. That money goes much further on a better grinder.

What is the difference between espresso, lungo and ristretto?

It is the same dose of coffee with a different amount of water. A ristretto is around 18 g for 25 ml and comes out dense and sweet; a double espresso, 18 g for 36 ml; a lungo goes past 60 ml and drags in more bitterness because it keeps extracting when there is nothing good left. If you want a long, mild coffee, go for an americano instead: espresso with hot water added.

Why do you need to warm the cup?

Because a cold cup takes between 8 and 10 °C off the drink in the first second, and an espresso served at 60 °C instead of 70 tastes dull and sour. Leave it on the cup warmer tray or rinse it with hot water: it costs nothing and you notice it in the first cup.

Should I go for the AeroPress Original or the Philips Series 5400 LatteGo?

The AeroPress Original is the most balanced option and the one we recommend by default. The Philips Series 5400 LatteGo makes sense if your priority is everyday use. As a budget reference, the useful range starts at around 100 € and the best balance is usually found around 160 €.
